Hi Panthers!
The countdown is on! We only have 9 school days left and we are trying to make the most of it!
This week we will be creating a flip books with some reading skills that we have learned this year. This flip book will be a handy tool to use at home this summer to brush up on some of these skills. Make sure that your child is reading this summer so they can keep up the fluency goals they worked so hard to reach!
In math we are going to be ending our last module of Engage NY on Monday with an end of module assessment. On Tuesday we will start reviewing some skills that need refining including elapsed time, division and fractions. We will be creating a book of math fluency activities that your child can work on over the summer.
This will be our last week of homework! Homework will be almost the same as it has been for the past few weeks. Your child will come home with a math sheet to work on, a reading log and then the only difference is spelling. Instead of a normal spelling list, I've compiled a list of words that students should know by the end of 3rd grade. On Friday, we will be having a spelling bee in class. I will be pulling the words from that list. My suggestion to the kids was to go through the words and highlight the words that they don't have mastered. This can be done with a pre-test. Then just work on studying those words throughout the week. There will be prizes for the winners!!
Upcoming Events:
5/19 Lego League Exhibition in the Library (for those in Lego League)
5/20 - Class spelling Bee
5/20 - Teacher vs. 8th grade softball game (wear sunblock and cool clothing as we will be outside watching this in the morning.)
5/24 Panther Step-up day! Students will get to meet their new teacher during this event. The event will take place in the morning.
5/25 FULL DAY OF SCHOOL!
5/26 Last day of school/ Half day
Multiplication Fluency: Students have started taking multiplication timed tests. These tests consist of 25 problems that need to be completed in 1 minute. Each student started by taking the 0s test, then moved to 1s and 2s and so on. They need to pass each test twice in order to move onto the next number. Each child has a sticker chart on their desk where they are tracking which number they are on! Make sure to ask them which number they are on. We have students ranging from 2s to 7s this week. At home your child can be making flash cards to help memorize their facts!
Writing: We are focusing on writing in our WIN time. WIN time is 40 minutes of the day where students are divided up into groups based on what they need. During this time, students are given a writing prompt and 2 related passages. We are working on reading the passages carefully, underlining details that answer the writing prompt, using a graphic organizer to organize these details and then writing a 5 paragraph essay addressing the prompt. This week we are reading and writing about The Chicago Fire.
Homework: Homework is handed out as a packet each Monday and is due on Friday. Students have homework in math, reading and spelling Monday-Thursday. I collect the homework on Friday. If your child is not turning in homework, please ensure they do! This packet is all fluency practice to make them better in each subject area.
Epic: Epic is like Netflix, but with books instead of movies. Students can choose from thousands of digital books, both audio & read to self. If you have internet access, please have your child sign into Epic this week and create an account. If they are unable, let me know so that I can have them sign in at school! We have a contest running weekly - whoever reads the most books on EPIC during the week will receive a prize on Friday! Read Panthers!!!

Click on Mrs. Fernkes in the top right corner of the page, create an account and start reading! Your child's reading log will be emailed to you weekly and I will be able to view their reading log as well! Most of all, this opens up an opportunity for your child to read more and enjoy it! If you have any trouble logging in or if you wish for me to set up an account for your child let me know!
Agendas & Name Badges: I am noticing more and more students are beginning to forget their name badges & agendas. Please remember, your child should NOT be bringing their name badge home unless they are a bus rider. Agendas MUST be signed every night. This is a communication tool between me and you. I sign agendas each morning to ensure the students are filling it out so if you leave me a note I will write back.
Friday Journals: You should have noticed your child coming home with a yellow journal on Friday. Each week they write a letter to you letting you know about their week. My hope is that this will keep you in the loop as to what is happening in class. I encourage you to write back so your child will have something to read on Monday morning. They are so excited to see your letters!
Attendance: Coming to school each day is essential to your child's academic success. Please make sure your child is here and on time each and every day.
The Parent Portal, which allows parents to view grades online, is now available. In order to access this important information device, parents must come in person with a photo ID to the school office for a security ID. Please make time to come to the school office for your security ID as it will make staying informed about your child’s grades and attendance records readily available to you. Keeping on top of your child’s assignments and areas they are struggling in will make report card time much nicer!
